Jerusalem: Still Key to Any Future Israeli-Palestinian Agreement: March, 2013
In this Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) sponsored policy paper, PIJ co-editors Hillel Schenker and Ziad AbuZayyad, along with FES director Ingrid Moss discuss the socio-economic problems within Jerusalem that have stemmed from Israel’s unilateral annexation of the city in 1967. The paper examines: discrepancies in the allocation of infrastructure subsidies between East and West Jerusalem from the Jerusalem municipality despite similar rates of taxation, increasing scarcity and expensiveness of building permits in East Jerusalem, systematic Judaization of East Jerusalem and the Old City, and isolation of Palestinian Jerusalemites from the West Bank which has had negative economic effects. The paper also outlines potential remedies for the issues in combination with the position of various actors in the international community.
