To the Editors,
I appreciated Dan Leon's critique of the racist policies of the JNF
("The Jewish National Fund: How the Land Was 'Redeemed,'"
Palestine-Israel Journal, Vol. 12, No. 4 & Vol. 13, No. 1).
However, I don't think it's quite accurate to describe Noam
Chomsky as an "opponent of Zionism." Chomsky is certainly a critic
of mainstream Zionism, including its commitment to a Jewish state,
but he has expressed admiration for the binationalist tendencies of
some Left Zionist groupings before 1948, and hence is not exactly
an opponent of Zionist ideology as such (he makes these
distinctions in his early book Peace in the Middle East?). In this
sense his critique of Zionism is somewhat different from that of
Israeli anti-Zionists such as Uri Davis, Moshe Machover, Akiva Orr,
and the late Israel Shahak.
I must say I admire your journal - I find it to be a worthy
successor to New Outlook, which Chomsky rightly described as a
source of sane and rational commentary on the Middle East.
