1.7.06 Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz told U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that Washington should pressure Syrian President Bashar Assad to influence Hamas political bureau chief Khaled Mash'al to bring about the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. The soldier was abducted in an attack by three Palestinian militant groups on an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) post near the Gaza border. Two soldiers were killed in the attack. 10.7.06 Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert vowed to continue his plan for unilateral withdrawal from the West Bank, saying that the current round of violence would not stop the eventual establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.
For the first time since 1967, Israel refused entry to returning Palestinians with foreign citizenship, most of them Americans, who had lived and worked for years in the West Bank. Citizens of Arab states (whether or not of Palestinian origin) have been barred from entering Israel since 2000.

12.7.06 The IDF launched a widespread aerial assault on Lebanon after Hizbullah attacked across the northern border, leaving eight soldiers dead and two kidnapped. An IAF plane bombed a three-story building in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood in Gaza City, killing nine members of the Abu Selmiyeh family. Another 40 people were injured.

13.7.06 A Katyusha rocket fired from Lebanon hit a house in the northern border town of Nahariya, killing an Israeli woman and wounding 29 others.
Israel Navy vessels blocked access to Lebanese ports which, according to Israeli sources, were used to transfer both terrorists and weapons to the terror organizations operating in Lebanon.
An IAF aircraft fired a rocket into Hizbullah's al-Manar television station in the group's stronghold in the south of Beirut, wounding six people. The IAF also put out of commission the runway of the country's only international airport in Beirut.
An IAF airplane attacked the Palestinian Foreign Ministry in Gaza City, severely damaging the building and causing widespread destruction in the area. Since 12.7, 23 Palestinians were killed in the Gaza Strip as the Israeli forces expanded their operations. A mother, her five children, a senior Hamas official, and 11 armed militants were among the dead.

14.7.06 The IDF completed its "Summer Rains" incursion into the central Gaza Strip. Thirty Palestinians were killed, with no Israeli casualties.

16.7.06 Eight Israelis were killed as rockets fired by Hizbullah guerillas in Lebanon struck the northern port of Haifa.
Three Palestinians were killed and at least 11 people were wounded in Israeli air strikes in Beit Hanoun. A Palestinian woman was killed by shrapnel during Israeli tank shelling in southern Gaza.

17.7.06 British Prime Minister Tony Blair and United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan discussed sending an international force to Lebanon to put an end to the Hizbullah rocket fire and the Israeli assaults, while the U.S. ambassador to the UN spoke of the need "to send a force to deal with Hizbullah."
Fifty-three Lebanese civilians were killed in 70 IAF strikes as the IDF continued its offensive against Lebanon, in an effort to secure the release of the two abducted soldiers and to stop Hizbullah from raining rockets on northern Israel.

23.7.06 Syrian Information Minister Muhsen Bilal warned that Syria would not remain idle if Israel invaded Lebanon, explaining that an incursion into southern Lebanon would bring Israeli ground forces to within 20 kilometers of Damascus.

26.7.06 Eight Palestinians were killed in three separate IDF attacks in northern Gaza.

27.7.06 IDF troops killed 23 Palestinians in fighting across the Gaza Strip, including at least nine militants, three children and a disabled man.

The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights (B'Tselem) stated that in July, the Israeli military killed 163 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, among them 78 non-combatants. Thirty-six of the fatalities were minors, and 20 were women. In the West Bank, 15 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in July.

5.8.06 The U.S. and France agreed on a UN Security Council draft resolution for ending the crisis in Lebanon. Israel agreed to the provision that the UN Interim Force (UNIFIL) deployed in south Lebanon be replaced by an international force.

7.8.06 Seven Palestinians were hospitalized, one in serious condition, after one of them opened a suspicious envelope addressed to Palestinian PM Haniyeh.
In a report to the UN Security Council, Secretary-General Kofi Annan said a comprehensive investigation was needed to determine possible violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws affecting both Lebanese and Israeli civilians during the conflict.

8.8.06 The Israeli government offered to finance the cost of some 17,000 residents of the northern border region to leave the area for several days.

10.8.06 Fifteen Israeli soldiers were killed in south Lebanon in brutal clashes with Hizbullah fighters near the village of Marj Ayoun and neighboring Khiam and Kila.

13.8.06 In their report on Israel's policy of freezing family unification for Palestinians in the occupied territories, B'Tselem and HaMoked noted that for almost six years, Israel has forbidden Palestinians from living with their spouses who are foreign residents. Israel has refused to process the more than 120,000 requests for family unification that have been submitted during this period.

14.8.06 The Second Lebanon War between Hizbullah and Israel, which started on July 12, 2006, ended when a UN-brokered ceasefire went into effect. The conflict killed over 1,500 people, mostly Lebanese, severely damaged Lebanese infrastructure, displaced about 900,000 Lebanese and 300,000 Israelis, and disrupted normal life across Lebanon and northern Israel. Even after the ceasefire, 256,000 Lebanese remained displaced, and parts of southern Lebanon remained uninhabitable due to unexploded cluster bombs.

5.9.06 B'Tselem stated that in August 2006, Israeli forces killed 76 Palestinians, 19 of them minors, in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, 40 of them non-combatants. During the same period, Palestinians killed one member of the Israeli forces in the West Bank.

11.9.06 During a speech at a memorial service for a soldier killed in Lebanon in the recent war, MK Effi Eitam of the rightist National Union - National Religious Party said that the great majority of Palestinians in the West Bank should be expelled.
A contingent of 16 Jewish leaders from nine European countries arrived in Israel for a three-day solidarity mission.

12.9.06 The spokesman for the Hamas-led Palestinian National Authority (PNA) government, Ghazi Hamad, told Israel Army Radio that the new PNA coalition will have "no problem" holding peace talks with Israel over pre-1967 war borders, and that the Palestinians are ready for an independent state in the territories captured by Israel in 1967. But Hamas was not speaking in terms of the "end of the conflict," he added.
In an interview with Haaretz, Ahmad Yusef, political adviser to PM Haniyeh, said "the European states have promised to reconsider their stance regarding the boycott of the Palestinian government. Following the war, there is greater understanding in Europe that they must present a more balanced stance regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict."

17.9.06 Two West Bank churches were set on fire as a wave of Muslim anger over comments by Pope Benedict XVI on Islam grew throughout the Palestinian areas. Muslims hurled firebombs and opened fire at five churches in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

19.9.06 Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni at the opening of the UN General Assembly's ministerial meeting in New York, and promised to "exert maximum effort" to secure the release of captured soldier Gilad Shalit.

20.9.06 Israeli and Palestinian women met with female heads of state and foreign ministers in their continuing efforts to work toward a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The war in Lebanon gave the International Women's Commission (IWC) new purpose and a new opportunity.

26.9.06 Australian Prime Minister John Howard said that Arab nations must recognize Israel's right to exist for there to be peace in the Middle East. Israel would also have to accept a Palestinian state for the sake of progress towards peace.
In a "strongly worded letter" from Egypt's intelligence chief Omar Suleiman to the Syrian-based Hamas leader Mash'al, Egypt demanded that Hamas immediately release the captured Israeli soldier to avoid a worsening crisis in Gaza.
