To the Editors,
I appreciated Dan Leon's critique of the racist policies of the JNF
("The Jewish National Fund: How the Land Was 'Redeemed,'"
Palestine-Israel Journal, Vol. 12, No. 4 & Vol. 13, No. 1).
However, I don't think it's quite accurate to describe Noam
Chomsky as an "opponent of Zionism." Chomsky is certainly a critic
of mainstream Zionism, including its commitment to a Jewish state,
but he has expressed admiration for the binationalist tendencies of
some Left Zionist groupings before 1948, and hence is not exactly
an opponent of Zionist ideology as such (he makes these
distinctions in his early book Peace in the Middle East?). In this
sense his critique of Zionism is somewhat different from that of
Israeli anti-Zionists such as Uri Davis, Moshe Machover, Akiva Orr,
and the late Israel Shahak.
I must say I admire your journal - I find it to be a worthy
successor to New Outlook, which Chomsky rightly described as a
source of sane and rational commentary on the Middle East.

To the Editors,
I'm a prisoner at the Pelican Bay State Prison in California. The
state hardly provides us inmates with reading material. I'm an
inmate without any funds, therefore I'm unable to pay for a
subscription to your journal, so I was wondering if it is possible
for you to provide me with a free subscription?
If this is not possible, maybe you happen to have some extra
reading material that you're willing to donate to us inmates.
Whatever you can do to help will be most appreciated.

P.S. Please know that whatever you donate will be shared with all
the inmates in this section.
The PIJ is providing Mr. Palacios a free subscription to the
Journal. We encourage our readers to send him and the other inmates
further reading material. His address is E. Palacios # J-61291,
Pelican Bay State Prison, P.O. Box 7500, Crescent City CA 95532,
USA.
The Palestine-Israel Journal invites readers to submit

topical and relate to issues raised in the Journal. Letters should
bear the name and place of residence of the writer, and may be
edited and shortened for space considerations. They should be
addressed to pij@palnet.com or Palestine-Israel Journal, P.O. Box
19839, Jerusalem 91197 or fax 972-2-6273388.
