Wevyn Muganda is a human rights activist from Mombasa, Kenya and the 2021 Cora Weiss Peacebuilding Fellow at the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders. Through her blog, Beyond the Lines, she is disrupting the narratives of violent extremism by raising awareness and educating the online community on how to enhance peace and security. Through her activism, she has built a network of youth leaders in Mombasa, some of whom were once victims of violence or gang members but have since become influencers in their local communities. In 2019, Muganda received the “She Can” award for her outstanding work in advancing human rights and increasing access to justice for women affected by violence. In 2020, she co-initiated Mutual Aid Kenya, a community-funded COVID-19 response initiative providing essential supplies and enhancing political participation among communities in informal settlements of Mombasa and Nairobi. She is a member of the advisory board of the Mombasa Social Justice Centre and the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Global 16x16 initiative, which supports 16 activists from all over the world in advancing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 — peace, justice, and strong institutions.
